Fit and Cut
The fit and cut is probably where men and women’s t-shirts differ the most. Men’s t-shirts tend to have a looser, more relaxed fit that can accommodate wider shoulders and chests without restricting movement. Women’s t-shirts, on the other hand, tend to be more form-fitting, with narrower shoulders and a tapered waist. This contoured shape of women’s t-shirts allows extra room for the bust and hips and gives an overall more feminine silhouette compared to the straight and boxy silhouette of men’s t-shirts.
The sizing system for women’s clothes is also often more complex than for men’s, with sizes ranging from XXS-XXL and body type and shape being considered more closely.
Fabric
The primary difference in fabric for men’s and women’s t-shirts lies in the weight and drape. Men’s t-shirts are often made from heavier fabrics like thick cotton, providing structure and durability. Women’s t-shirts tend to use a wide range of fabrics like silk, chiffon and light cotton blends as these softer, lighter fabrics flow naturally with the shape of the body, providing a more feminine feel and look.
Design
Although t-shirts come in a variety of different colours and designs for both genders, men’s t-shirts tend to be more graphic-heavy, with bold prints, band names and logos. Conversely, women’s t-shirts tend to have more delicate and decorative designs, featuring embellishments, lace and cut outs. Women’s t-shirts are also more likely to feature floral and playful patterns and prints, whereas men’s t-shirts tend to be simple and practical.
Men’s t-shirts also tend to have longer, straight cut sleeves and harsher necklines compared to women’s t-shirts which often have capped short sleeves and a soft scoop, V-neck or boat neckline.
